Actually, the adapter is a really nice touch to be included with an aftermarket fan. Its this attention to detail that really makes this a first time modder friendly fan. So now, you have no excuse not to replace that 80mm fan with the nice, new 90mm UFO fan!
Actually, a lot of attention has been paid to the details with this product. The wiring has been sleeved to help keep everything clean (its also white so theoretically, it should also glow under a black light), it comes with clear instructions for all you first-timers out there and you have options on how you would like this fan to run.
Keep in mind that any 90mm fan is going to make a fair amount of noise but what are you going to do. Well, with the UFO fan, Thermaltake has given you 3 options:
1) You can run the fan full speed (and full volume) by plugging it directly into the motherboard.
2) You can use the fan speed controller to....control the fan speed (and thus the volume).
3) You can use the provided temperature probe and let the fan control its own speed automatically based on temperature.
So, now we come to the moment of truth. We decided to test the UFO against the Thermaltake Volcano 11 stock fan. Here are the specs for the test system:
AMD 2600+ 333 MHz
Asus A7N8X
Corsair 2700 XMS 512 Megs
Maxtor 80 Gig 8 meg cache Harddrive
To calculate the temperatures, we used Sandra burn in wizard for 30 minutes. Here are the results:
As you can see, the UFO fan performed quite well. In our humble opinion this is a nice upgrade for all you people out there who are looking to upgrade from their 80mm fans to something bigger and flashier. And just to give you an idea of what we mean when we say flashier, here is a little movie we took of the UFO fan in all its glory!
Pros:
Moves a fair amount of air (81.2 CFMs)
Aluminium fan adapter included
Comes with a fan controller AND a temperature probe.
6 very bright LED lights
Sleeved wires
Selection of fan colours
Cons:
Running on full it is extremely loud.
When we say very bright LEDs we mean to the point of seeing spots if you look directly at them!
