Evercool SCP-A Fan Controller

Company: Evercool
Product: Fan Controller
Reviewer: Goblin

If you’re into modding and or overclocking, you know that the more toys you put into your system (be it to make it go faster, look cooler, whatever), the hotter the inside of your case is going to get. The simple solution is to add more fans to get that air circulating. Of course, the more fans you add, the louder your computer gets, until you have the equivalent of a large hairdryer sitting beside you. Now, unless you only use your computer for hardcore gaming and other CPU intensive activities, there is no reason to have your fans going at maximum speed all the time. Evercool has introduced the SCP-A. Simply put, it’s a device designed to give you complete control over up to 3 fans in your computer. This means you can turn your fans up for that intensive game of Unreal 2004 and turn them down when you’re surfing the web.

After unpacking the control I found the control itself, 3 male to male 3 pin fan cables, 3 male to female fan extension cables and 4 screws. No instructions. This I found a little confusing. I’m used to fan controllers taking their power directly through a 4 pin power supply molex connector. In this case, the power comes from the fan headers on your motherboard. This gives the controller an easy way to control fan RPMs but it still struck me as a bit awkward.

The SCP-A is a simple looking device. 3 silver knobs on a dark blue background. I’ll tell you the truth; my first impressions of this controller were not good. The knobs are made of silver plastic and overall, it looks like something you’d pick up at the local dollar store. Surrounding each knob is an LED display. These LEDs range from blue to purple, blue being the slowest all the way to purple when your fan speeds are maxed out. I thought this was a great idea, easy to see with a glance what’s going on with each fan. The lights glow really nicely, especially in the dark, giving the front of your case a nice little bit of eye candy. I would have preferred an actual RPM listing for each fan but the colour system worked for me. The colours list as follows:

Low = Light Blue
Middle = Purple
High = Pink
Failure=Red
Output Voltage = 3.75v – 11.73337v
