So now comes the big question; what is a Real No-noise Design? Well, as it turns out, this is how the power supply is able to remain fanless. Instead of the traditional fan removing the hot air, the Coolmax psu uses heatsinks and a collection of slits around the unit to help the heat escape.

In theory, this sounds like it just might work, but let’s put it to the test and see. We installed this power supply into one of our test systems and kept track of the voltages over a three day period. As you can see, the results are pretty much standard for the specs listed.

+12 volts averaged 12.04
+5 volts came to 5.04
+3.3 volts came to 3.14

As for the heat, well that is a good news bad news sort of thing. The internal case temperature did go up after we installed the silent power supply but only an average of 2 degrees. That is a sign of good planning and a company that knows what it is doing. The truth is, we expected a fanless heatsink to generate a lot more heat then this one actually did. Coolmax’s silent power supply has to be experienced to be believed.

One thing we did not expect however is how creepy a silent psu truly is. Power supply’s make noise. That’s just how it has always been. When they stop making noise alarm bells start to ring in your head (at least they did in mine).

Compare it to if your car’s engine suddenly stopped making noise. You know the car is running but it’s silent. That should give you an idea of what a truly silent power supply sounds like. This is not a complaint, after all that is what this power supply was designed to do but until you have actually heard (perhaps a better choice of words is NOT heard) what this unit can do, you just won’t believe how much noise a standard power supply makes.

Overall, this unit is a real performer. Coolmax is able to provide a completely silent power supply with a very slight increase in temperature. If we hadn’t seen it we would not have believed it. If you are trying to make a completely silent system or are just in the market for a new power supply, check out Coolmax’s silent power supply. It’s everything you would expect from a high end power supply…but quieter.

Pros:

• It’s silent. Not really quiet but truly silent
• Sleeved wires
• 6 molex adapters
• Over-voltage protection
• Fanless

Cons:
• There is a slight increase in internal temperatures.
• Not all the wires are sleeved.
