As MP3 players become more popular it gets more difficult to determine what is going to fit your needs the best in a given price range. Today we are going to take a peek at X-Micro’s EVA 256. A nice, feature-packed MP3 player that appears to be the perfect combination of quantity and quality.
So, let’s start at the beginning with the packaging. This is one of the nicest packaging jobs I’ve seen in a long time. Forget the blister-packed plastic; this comes in a nice colourful box with a magnetic lid to keep it closed (truth is, we spent a lot more time playing with the box than adults should admit to). Open it up and you will find:
• The MP3 player.
• A nice thick manual
• Mini-disc
• USB extension cable
• Neck strap
• Fm radio earphones
• 1 AAA battery
Right off the bat, that’s a lot of practical stuff to include with a player. The manual is nice and thick (it explains everything in detail) and a free battery is always a nice touch. The mini-disc comes with all the drivers and the Digital Audio Manager software to help you add files and MP3s (or WMAs) to your player. One thing we should point out is that while this software is well laid out and very easy to use, you can also use windows explorer to drag and drop everything onto your player. Personally, we liked the way their software was set up (simple drag and drop) but due to music piracy issues you can not upload MP3s from your player to your computer. This is understandable and common with many players on the market but keep this in mind before you go and erase any songs off of your harddrive.
As for the player itself, we were happily surprised when we took it out of the box. First off, this is not just an Mp3 player but also a portable drive. So, if you want to move files from point A to point B, feel free. It also comes in 128, 256 and 512 models with a 12 hour battery life so you can pick the device that best suits your needs. Also, we absolutely loved the USB extension cord. Forget having to plug everything in the back of your computer if you don’t have USB ports in the front. This adapter lets you plug any USB device in from where ever you want. It should be pointed out that this player is not USB 2.0 compliant but honestly the difference is barely noticeable.
